A Letter to My First Born…

Tomorrow is the day, the day you become a big sister! I’ve been thinking about this day almost from the moment I first laid eyes on you, and I am so incredibly excited for you.

You are a gift straight from heaven, and have been from your very first breath. You have brought more joy and love into our home and hearts than I thought was humanly possible. Every day we thank our Heavenly Father for giving you to us, for your sweet spirit and the joy that you bring into our home.

I always knew we would have another baby, and I always knew you would be an excellent big sister. I am so excited to have another baby girl, and for you to experience what it’s like to grow up with a sister.

I am so happy with the little girl that you have become. You are energetic, spunky, sensitive, and caring. You give more hugs and kisses than any other two year old I know. You get so excited when you see a baby, and could sit and stare at babies for hours. You have a strong personality and you know how you want things done (just like your mama) but tickle fights and jumping on the bed are sure fire ways to make you laugh (like your daddy).

As we prepare to welcome another member into our family tomorrow, I am suddenly overwhelmed with emotions about how this is going to change your life forever. I think about how you love holding mama and daddy’s hands everywhere we go, and how our hands will be more full now. I think about how you are the center of our universe, and how we’re going to have two world’s now. I think about how your favorite thing is to climb in our bed and get underneath the blankets with us, and how there will be less space for that now.

But I also think about how your face lights up when you see a baby, how you say baby sister’s name when you get into the car and see her car seat, how you put stuffed animals from your crib into her bassinet, and how excitedly you point to the baby in your big sister book and say her name. I think about how proud you get when you do something we ask (like bring us diapers), how well you understand everything that we say, how you love playing and sharing your toys with others, and I see exactly how good of a big sister you are going to be.

You were meant for this role. We are so grateful that we are capable of giving you a sibling. I can’t wait to see the two of you grow up together, so close in age and hopefully close in spirit. I know this was God’s plan, to give us two little girls to raise, and I know that our family is not complete without bringing her here. I know you are going to be amazing, that even though this role will be a difficult one to adjust to, that you will excel at it.

We love you so much, and you will always hold a special place in our hearts. We are so excited for tomorrow, and can’t wait to be a family of four.
