DIY Wood Patio Table

After building these modern patio chairs and modern patio sofa last week I looked at the pile of scrap wood and thought I should turn it into a table…because WHY NOT?! We were using an old outdoor table (my first DIY!) but it had seen better days and I wanted my new patio furniture to all coordinate. This scrap wood project is super easy to complete, and looks really nice with the other patio furniture plans I posted. In one afternoon and for about $20 of materials I made this DIY wood patio table, here’s how!

*Disclosure: I reused some hairpin legs from a previous project which is why my cost was $20. Actual cost may vary depending on what materials you already own.

Materials

8, 2x3x8 whitewood studs
3 inch exterior screws
steel hairpin table legs
-stain or paint of choice
exterior sealant

Tools

power drill
drill bits
power saw
power sander
chip brush

Cut List

These are the cuts required to make a table that is 42×32. *Note, I built my table top first and built the frame around it. I recommend doing the same thing to avoid any gaps along the edges.

-11 cuts at 38 inches
-2 cuts at 27 1/2 inches
-2 cuts at 41 inches
-2 cuts at 27 inches

Instructions

1. Line the 11, 40 inch boards up in the desired order. Pre drill holes. Screw each of the 11 boards into 2 of the 27 inch boards to create the bottom of the table. It should look like this:

2. Build the side frame. Screw the 27 1/2 inch boards onto the short ends of the table top. Use once screw per board to make everything secure.

3. Screw the final two 41 inch boards onto the long sides of the table. From the top, your table should look like this:

4. Sand everything with a power sander. Then wipe clean with a rag.

5. Apply stain or paint of choice. When dry, apply an exterior sealant to protect from weather.

6. Attach the hairpin legs. There are lots of places to purchase hairpin legs, but here are some good ones from Amazon.

That’s it! This table is HEAVY and sturdy and definitely suitable for outdoor living. I love seeing you tag me in the DIY projects you tackle, let me know if this DIY wood patio table is next on your project to do list!
