Creating a Peaceful Sleep Environment

I’ve been doing a lot of posts about sleep lately, because it’s high on my priority list these days and something I’m constantly trying to get more of! When Tomorrow Sleep reached out about working together, I jumped at the opportunity to recreate our master bedroom with sleep being at the center and focus of the room.

Over the years, our bedroom has become the place where we store everything we don’t use and where we hide our messes when guests drop by. It’s always cluttered with clothes lying around and papers stacked up on nightstands. I hate going to bed at night reminded of my ever growing to-do list and all the chores waiting for me in the morning. I knew I wanted things to change, but old habits die hard and it’s hard tackling a big project head on!

I knew I needed to start somewhere, so little by little we implemented changes to make our bedroom more serene and a place we actually wanted to hang out. This has been months in the making (I started last February!) but we’re finally getting into a rhythm and feeling like we have our system down. Here are some of the things that have helped turn our bedroom into a happy and calm environment, perfect for lots of restful sleep!

  • Move your laundry basket – there’s nothing like waking up in the morning to an overflowing basket of laundry that needs to be done! We moved our baskets to our laundry closet and committed to stop leaving our laundry in piles around the room. Not only did this eliminate lots of tripping hazards, but it made us more organized and cleared up a lot of space in our room.
  • Get blackout curtains – our bedroom actually gets the most light of any room in the house, this is great during the day but awful when trying to sleep! We grabbed some blackout curtains from Tomorrow Sleep and it’s amazing how much better we sleep without the early light shining in our faces. And by “we” I mean my husband because I’m up before the sun anyways! #kids
  • White noise – not just for babies! We have little fans on our nightstands that we use to keep cool in the summer, but they also make great white noise machines! Since we live in an apartment complex, other residents aren’t always considerate when it comes to our 10pm bedtime so having white noise to tune everything out helps a lot!
  • Turn phones OFF – I know this seems impossible, but it helps so much! The buzzing and lights that come on whenever notifications come through can be tempting to look at when you should be sleeping. For me, I’m always tempted to look at my phone when I’m up nursing Elliott even though I know that looking at a screen will make it harder to fall back asleep. If you just turn it off, you’re guaranteed to not be disturbed!
  • Really good bedding – Get the soft sheets and big cozy blankets! Make going to bed an exciting and comforting thing. We love having a big heavy comforter to sleep with because the weight makes us feel secure and cozy. Find what works for you and indulge!
  • An awesome mattress – We are over the moon in love with our memory foam mattress from Tomorrow Sleep. It uses hybrid cooling technology to keep our body temperatures lower which helps us fall and stay asleep, especially when it’s hot during the summer. It has helped immensely with our back pain (mine from nursing, and my husband’s from a herniated disk) and keeps us from waking each other up in the middle of the night. I love that when I get in and out of bed to take care of Elliott, that Jared doesn’t feel me moving around and can stay asleep longer.
We have been tracking our sleep with the Tomorrow Sleep Tracker and it’s really fun seeing our different sleep cycles from the previous night!  Funny Story! We accidentally had our sensors switched for a few weeks and I was getting so frustrated because the tracker kept saying that I was sleeping great and never waking up in the middle of the night, when in reality I wasn’t sleeping much at all and was up 3-4 times a night! We finally figured out our mistake when we went to bed at two different times and saw that reflected incorrectly in the app! Needless to say, I felt much better when the tracker app recognized my hard work getting up every night to take care of a newborn!

If you’re in the market for a new mattress, I highly recommend checking out styles from Tomorrow Sleep! They offer everything you need to turn your bedroom into a retreat, from curtains and sheets, to mattresses, pillows, and trackers!
