Holistic Prep for Traveling During Flu Season

Since we planned our Disney trip for the middle of flu season, I started prepping myself and the girls weeks in advance to build up our immune systems and have everything we would need to stay healthy while traveling. I’ve recently delved into the world of holistic healing (kind of, I’m pretty amateur still!) but after doing some research and talking to friends I started doing the following things to fight off any germs we would come in contact with. I can say that we all managed to stay healthy during the trip (with the exception of a quick fever from Reagan one night, pretty sure this was the result of just a long day) and we used only holistic approaches!

Weeks Before:
-Establish a solid sleep routine – you guys know I’ve been working on a sleep routine for Elliott for months, and she’s been doing really well with it at home! I wanted to make sure that carried over to our trip so that she would nap well during the day and not be grumpy/more prone to sickness while we were at the parks. While she didn’t sleep well at night (sharing a room with three other people) she took great, scheduled naps during the day in her stroller which played a huge role in how she handled the long days. It also helped ensure that she got enough rest to fight off anything she came in contact with during the day!

-Super C – I started taking this vitamin C supplement from Young Living about two weeks before we left! It containts 2,166% of the recommended dietary intake of vitamin C per serving, and is fortified with tons of ingredients that assist the absorption of vitamin C.* Vitamin C is crucial to immune function and overall health, and I strongly believe that taking it daily helps give me an extra boost to stay healthy on the go!

-Elderberry Syrup – if you follow me on Instagram you know I started making my own elderberry syrup! It’s WAY cheaper to make it than buy it, and despite an acquired after taste Reagan drinks it no problem. There are so many immune boosting effects, and I have noticed that we get over illnesses faster since starting it. We both take some of this everyday as a preventative measure, and when someone is symptomatic we increase the dosage! Here is the recipe I follow, I make it in my Instant Pot and it takes no time at all!

Days Before/While Traveling:
-Essential Oils – I’m still very new to the world of essential oils, but two things I’ve been using them for over the last several months are sleep and immunity boosts. We always diffuse lavender in the bedrooms at night, and we usually diffuse an immunity blend during the day! My chiropractor helped me DIY a couple on the go roller blends to start using and then travel with, and I loved having one ready to go wherever we went! My sleep roller had lavender, sleepyize, and fractionated coconut oil (this is the one I use, it will last FOREVER) and the immunity roller had frankincense, lemon, thieves and coconut oil. I used these bottles from Amazon, and found some cute labels on Etsy!

-NingXia – another Young Living supplement, I gave Reagan one of these everyday we were at the park as an added immunity boost! They taste surprisingly good, and are chock full of super fruits and antioxidants to support overall wellness!

-Elderberry Gummies – since homemade elderberry syrup has to be refrigerated, I bought these elderberry gummies to pack with us on our trip instead! They have much less elderberry in them, but they were better than nothing and were much easier to travel with and take on the go!

Reagan’s favorite thing now is to use the rollers at night, and she knows exactly where to put each one! It’s actually really fun to see her get involved, and I feel like I’m teaching her good habits at a young age and ways to preemptively take control of her health!
