My days are busy – two kids in two different schools, a newborn baby, a husband in clinical rotations and a job I work from home keeps me occupied during the day! Once I put my kids to bed at night I rarely have energy to do ANYTHING, and my favorite way to wind down is by watching a show while I enjoy my first peaceful meal of the day.
I am very particular about the shows I watch, I firmly believe that the media we allow into our homes dictates the overall attitudes of our family. When I first heard about the TV show, The Chosen, I was intrigued!
The Chosen is the first multi-season television show about the life of Christ. And with $10,000,000 raised in crowdfunding for the first season, it is also the largest crowd funded TV series of all time. I started watching mostly out of curiosity last week, and I wanted to share what I think about this series!
What Makes it Different?
The first thing I noticed about The Chosen is that the acting is really, really good. I guess I’m accustomed to religious themed productions feeling cheesy or scripted and that is not the case for this series.
You really feel like you are transported back into the time when Christ lived on the Earth, and like you are getting to know the characters from the Bible. The emotions and disputes among characters feel real and relatable, and it gives a three dimensional view into what the people 2,000 years ago felt and experienced.
I can’t imagine what kind of responsibility Jonathan Roumie feels playing the role of Christ, but he does an excellent job! At first I was disappointed to see that Christ is portrayed as ordinary, average in stature and without a very commanding presence. But as you watch and see how he interacts with the people he encounters and teaches, I feel like this is an accurate representation of what he was actually like.
He feels loving and powerful in a subtle way. It is also really cool to see Christ portrayed with a sense of humor. I don’t know why that never occurred to me before, but why wouldn’t he have cracked jokes with his friends? It’s fun to see all the sides of Christ’s personality!
This is a show that I truly enjoy watching. And I consider The Chosen to be a show that everyone would enjoy watching regardless of religious beliefs. The Chosen tells the story of Christ in a way that is relatable to those well versed in the Bible as well as those hearing this story for the very first time.
Is The Chosen Historically Accurate?
There are obviously some creative additions to the story lines, but I think they add to the overall story of Christ we read about in the Bible. The character development brings you into their internal conflicts and desires. It gives a better understanding of why the disciples dropped everything to follow Christ and of why the people were so eager to hear him teach. It also portrays why the Romans were so scared of him.
It really helps to see the stories in the Bible brought to life in an organic way that flows with a timeline. It also helps to see a portrayal of what may have happened leading up to, and in between, the stories we are familiar with.
How Many Seasons of The Chosen Are There?
Season 1 is completely out and available for binge watching! Season 2 released on April 4, 2021, and episodes are releasing as quickly as they can be edited. Each season has eight episodes. Funding for Season 3 has already begun, and there will be 7 seasons in total!
I watched the first season of The Chosen in just under a week, and was so excited for the premier of Season 2! The first episode was fantastic, and carried on the story lines that began in Season 1. The Chosen has reeled me in like other “binge worthy” shows, and I love that it is wholesome, family friendly entertainment that I feel good about watching.
